When Is It Too Late... Or Is It Too Late Already? - NLP & Timelines

Updated on September 9, 2013

The Timeline Of Your Life

Sometimes in life time can go on for too long.

What do I mean by this?

Well, that first sentence is a generalization, a statement with a much deeper meaning which has all been compacted into one small generalization.

In life, time will only go on for too long if you allow it to.

Let me explain:

Think about the timeline of your life in the form of a conveyor belt with your future coming towards you from ahead, your past being transported off into the distance behind you and you centred in the here and now - the present.

As the future comes towards you it brings with it new people, new places, new opportunities, etc but you ultimately are only given a restricted length of 'time' to act upon any of these potential occurrences or any developments that arise from them before your time runs out and therefore time is a very important form of currency.

If you don't act upon that new career opportunity in time then you lose it. If you don't meet your client's needs in time then you lose them.

Quite simply put, if you don't meet YOUR deadlines regardless of what they are for (whether business or personal) then you lose out and so, potentially, do other people.

Let me explain further:

As an example let's imagine that you have an upcoming career opportunity, a new position or a promotion. Now, unless you have done everything required from you within the specified time period for each of those tasks given to you along the way to getting where you are then you probably wouldn't be where you are right now.

Imagine that you hadn't handed your last piece of work into your boss in time - this would have given your boss a bad impression or maybe even have cost you your job and so the consequences of not using your timeline accordingly (meeting upcoming deadlines) begins to take place.

Had you met the deadline you may have been given a new position or a promotion within your career and that is why it's important to remain conscious of the timeline of your life. Not only that, but you will have let your boss down and he now has to either get someone else to do the work or do it himself.

You may have even made him look unreliable to any superiors that he may have.

Cause & Effect

Whilst remaining consciously aware of the timeline of your life, you also need to be aware of cause and effect. By making one decision, accordingly with the opportunities your timeline offers, you will therefore somehow effect another opportunity causing you to lose out - ie you took the alternative offer.

For example, you may have had two job offers at the same time but decided to take the first and are therefore no longer eligible for the second - but you wish you had taken the second offer and now it's too late.

Therefore it's also very important to work out how to shape the future of your timeline in order to make decisions which will work for you instead of against you in your future.

But remember, the timeline of your life is not just about career opportunities or ambitions or goals - it's about everything including relationships.

Just imagine being so constantly busy in your life that you never get the time to contact a particular person. Maybe your hours of work clash with each other and therefore there is very little communication between you.

Over time you begin to lose contact with each other - someone changes their phone number or moves to a different address. You can no longer get in contact with them despite maybe eventually finding the time to attempt so.

This is actually very common and happens within a lot of families, I've seen it many times.

So remember, next time you think about someone you haven't spoken to in a while or that deadline you have to meet ask yourself:

When is it too late?... Or is it too late already?
