The Holographic Universe Theory: Is The Universe All Just A Hologram?

Updated on February 28, 2013

Lightyears From Earth

Astronomy tells us that planets are lightyears, sometimes hundreds, thousands or millions of lightyears away from Earth. This means that, because the Andromeda galaxy is 2.5 Million light years away from Earth, the light coming from Andromeda would take 2.5 million years to reach Earth and therefore when that light eventually reaches Earth and we can see it, it would have happened 2.5 Million years ago - therefore, in theory, we are looking back in time.

The planet Venus is located just two light-minutes away and therefore when we see Venus lighting up in the night sky we are seeing light which actually reflected off Venus two minutes prior to us seeing it - we are seeing the past happening now.

Could it be that all the stars (suns) in the universe are simply dispersing light which reflects off all the planets of their solar systems thereby illuminating them over the course of time making them visible? And could this light be reflecting between all of the solar systems and galaxies in the universe to create multiple dimensions of existence?

It's a theory worth considering.

The Holographic Universe

For decades man has been coming up with scientific theories of how everything we perceive (see, hear, feel, etc) as human beings could actually all be holographic. However, due to the fact that the cosmological horizon has a limitation area that grows with time, cosmological holography has not been made accurately in terms of mathematics.

The theory was originally inspired by black hole thermodynamics which theorizes that all objects that have fallen in to a black hole can be held in surface fluctuations on the event horizon. The principle of holograms appears to resolve Stephen Hawking's known 'black hole information paradox' inside of the framework of string theory.

To make matters (pun not intended) more complicated, Stephen Hawking, after thirty years of claiming that a black hole destroys everything that falls into it, recently announced that he may have been incorrect. The laws of quantum physics say that such information can never be entirely wiped out.

Hawking now believes that black holes keep on emitting radiation for a long time until eventually they open up to reveal the information within. Coincidentally, this is what self-proclaimed alien contactee Alex Collier claimed backed in the nineties. Collier claims to have been given many secrets about the universe and it's existence including the claim that we have had seven strands of our DNA removed.

Collier, amongst many others before him, claims that he has been told by aliens that contacted him that everything we perceive is holographic. The entire universe is a hologram; just a holographic impression. In fact, many books and television documentaries have been produced on the subject as far back as the 1950s.

The theory explains that the way we encode images, feeling and sound in our brains is actually encoded into understandable data by our brain, not by our eyes. In other words we actually see with our brain, not our eyes. The light that bounces off objects (matter) is reflected into the retina which is then spatially encoded before the information is decoded by the brain. For more information about internal mapping see NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming): Representational Systems.

It seems that the only reason that we can see, hear, touch and feel all real matter as we know it is purely because our brains are telling us to. In fact, the theory explains that even our brain is a hologram, it's only our internal perception of what we are programmed to be aware of in the exterior world and therefore nothing really exists as we believe it does, not even our brains. Everything we see, hear, feel, touch and smell is not really there outside of our pre-programmed awareness.

So who is that person inside us? Who is it that is pre-programmed to think the command 'I think therefore I am'? Theories explain that we, as one, are the true creators of our own reality, it's the reality that we create in our minds and our true existence must be as souls or as part of some giant computer program or matrix way beyond our current intellectual capacity and understanding. Our physical bodies are not real and if this theory is indeed true then it remains impossible to prove.

Although the holographic universe theory poses an interesting question, there are a couple of flaws that have failed to be addressed. Primarily, some of the information explains Darwin's dilemma and how he never found fossilized evidence of creatures going through the cycle of evolution. Technically, this may not be true.

It has been claimed that fossilized evidence of evolution was found several decades after Darwin's death though critics argue the evidence isn't anywhere near strong enough. The second major flaw is the fact that the way light is reflected into the eyes in the first place was completely neglected which begs the question 'If there's no real object or matter there then how can the light reflect off it?'

One thing we do know is that our brain filters information. Everything we perceive, see, hear, feel and smell has been filtered through by the brain as data that we can use, information that is useful for us, to guide us. It is this information that we base our values and beliefs upon and this, for each one of us, is our own unique model of the exterior world.

As explained in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) we all live in our own unique model of the world which is based on internal representations of external stimuli (pictures, sounds, smells, etc). Therefore it's still a possibility that there are things out there that we don't perceive, that we are not tuned into which in theory still makes parallel existence or existence on a higher dimension still very possible.
